On the Toyota Tacoma, the original XB headlights scored an overall rating of 3.8. The XB Evo Hybrid jumped to 6.8, while the full XB Evo with its dedicated high beam assist projector reached 8.0. With the supercharged driver, that climbed to an extraordinary 9.6. The improvement on the Tacoma is particularly dramatic because the original XB’s beam pattern, while functional, was narrow and lacked the distance reach that the new projectors deliver.

Now let’s look at the 09–18 Ram trucks, the original XB scored 5.5 overall, which was already one of the best scores among aftermarket headlights available for that platform at the time. Beyond the numbers, the supercharged driver also unlocks the startup animation sequence on the Hybrid models. And importantly, installing the supercharged driver does not void Morimoto’s 5-year warranty. The only caveat is that it pushes the headlights past DOT compliance limits, making them technically for off-road use only in that configuration. However, since you can swap back to the stock driver in minutes, many owners run the supercharged driver daily and keep the stock driver as a backup.

Do You Need to Replace Your Original XBs Right Now?

That depends on your priorities. If your original XB headlights are still performing well, the lenses are clear, and you’re satisfied with the brightness and features, there’s no urgent need to replace them. They were excellent headlights when they launched, and they still outperform most of the aftermarket competition.
