HID Relay Harness Install Guide: 9005/9006/H7/H11 Wiring

If you have ever upgraded to an HID system and noticed flickering, dim output, or inconsistent startup, the fix is almost always the same: proper power delivery. That is exactly what a heavy duty relay harness solves. In this guide, I am walking you through the complete HID relay wire harness installation process, covering the connections, the mounting orientation, and the wiring layout for 9005, 9006, 9012, and H10 applications (along with the H1, H3, H7, H8, H9, and H11 variants that share the same design logic). Why an HD Relay Harness Matters

The whole point of this harness is independent, direct power. At the center of the harness you will notice two relays, one relay for each side of the car. This layout means each ballast gets its own dedicated power path pulled straight from the battery instead of relying on the thinner factory wiring that was originally designed for halogen bulbs. When we tested this on the bench and in vehicles, that independent feed is what gives you clean, stable output on both sides at the same time.

Mounting the Relays Correctly

Before we get into wiring, the physical mounting matters more than people expect. When you actually mount these relays in the car, you want to use the included mounting bracket and make sure both relays face upward. This orientation is not cosmetic. It ensures the best longevity by keeping moisture out of the contacts, which over time is what causes corrosion and eventual failure. We install ours facing up every single time, and it is one of the simplest habits that keeps a system running for years.

The Five Key Connections

Stemming out from the relays, there are a handful of connections, but really there are only five, so it is not very complicated. Once you understand what each one does, the rest of the install is just routing wires cleanly. Let me break each connection down the same way I did on the bench.

Step 1: The Two 9006 Female Ballast Outputs

There are two identical connectors, each a 9006 female connector, and these are your outputs for the ballasts. Every ballast you get from TRS is going to have a matching input, so it connects right in and clips in nice and firm. These two outputs are what actually feed power to each side’s ballast, and because they are identical, there is no left or right rule for the connector type itself.

Step 2: Understanding the Longer Output Cord

Here is a detail that trips people up during routing. You will notice that on one of those connectors, the output cord is a lot longer. This is intentional. The longer cord lets you reach power to the opposite side of the car, because both outputs ultimately tie back into a single harness that connects to the car battery on one side. So one ballast sits near the battery, and the longer cord carries power across to the ballast on the far side. Plan your wire routing around this before you start zip tying anything down.

Step 3: The Positive and Ground Terminals

Next are the battery terminals. There is a positive terminal with the fuse and a negative or ground terminal on the black wire. The positive lead includes an inline 25A fuse for protection, and the ground is a nickel-plated ring-type terminal. Both of these connect directly to the car battery. You just want to make sure you get a perfect connection on both the positive terminal and the ground terminal, because a loose battery connection here undermines the entire benefit of running a relay harness in the first place.

Step 4: Note the Dual Ground Variant

Depending on your particular model of harness, you may have two ground cables instead of one. Do not let that throw you off. The harness function is exactly the same whether it has a single ground or dual grounds. It is just something to keep in mind so you do not second guess yourself mid install if your unit looks slightly different from the video.

Step 5: The Input Trigger Connector

The last and most important connection on the harness is the input trigger. There is only one of these, and it may look a little different depending on your model. On this example it is a 9006 male connector, but the H7s, H11s, and H1s look a little different. What it does is plug into the factory outlet that used to power the halogen light bulb. Essentially it just turns on the harness, triggering the relays so they draw power from the battery and send it out to the ballasts. You will plug it into the side closer to the car battery.

Fitment and Application Options

This particular harness is the HD Relay built for 9005, 9006, 9012, or H10 fitments, and it works for HID systems running as low beams, high beams, or fog lights. Because the design principle is universal, the same layout applies whether you are running a 9006 trigger or one of the other bulb-shaped connectors. When You Need Extra Components

The base HD relay harness handles standard single-output HID setups on its own, but there are a few scenarios per the verified product specs where you will need additional parts. Bi-xenon projectors require high beam splitters, which are not included. If your vehicle sends a PWM pulsing signal, you will need a capacitor link, also not included. And CANBUS systems require either a standalone CANBUS harness or a Mopar spec harness, again not part of the base kit. Knowing this ahead of time saves you from a half-finished install and a second trip to the parts shelf.

Final Install Tips

To recap the workflow: mount both relays upward using the bracket, connect the two 9006 female outputs to your ballasts (remember the longer cord reaches the far side), secure the positive terminal with its inline 25A fuse and the ground terminal directly to the battery, and finally plug the single input trigger into the factory bulb socket on the side closest to the battery. That trigger is what wakes up the relays and lets power flow.
